How the NightShift Positional Device Works

Night Shift is clinically proven positional sleep therapy device that actively discourages users from sleeping on their back, to prevent snoring and related sleep disorders. Worn comfortably around the neck during sleep with the blue label facing out and the ON button facing down. The Night Shift device produces a gentle vibration every time the wearer attempts to sleep on their back. The vibration will incrementally increase until the user changes their sleep position.

Night Shift does not usually disturb your sleep. This has been determined from observing EEG (Electrical Brain Activity) of patients undergoing, overnight sleep studies, whilst wearing the Night Shift. The EEG arousal(sleep disturbance causing a lighter level of sleep or wake) usually happens when the patient rolls onto their back, before the Night Shift responds, not from the response.

Night Shift records relevant of data about your sleep including:

  • Sleep Time
  • Snoring Level
  • Head/Neck Position
  • Frequency and Intensity of Response

Sleep time is derived from Actigraphy, which is a widely validated method of measuring sleep from movement. See Wikipedia for more details.

Interpreting NightShift Sleep Positioner Daily Reports

The Night Shift provides the most recent six nights of detailed information in the “Daily Reports” format. Data older than 6 nights is stored in the summarised daily and monthly report format below. The Daily Report in Therapy-ON mode allows users to determine:

  • The number of times you attempt to sleep on your back and how quickly you respond to therapy.
  • When your awakenings occur and for how long you are awake.
  • If your snoring or sleep efficiency changes as a result of sleeping position, time of night, heavy meals, or alcohol consumption before bed.

The Night Shift Portal allows user to set Night Shift to Therapy-OFF mode to monitor sleep monitor sleep patterns without the device vibrating to establish a baseline. When Trial Mode is selected, the first night is set to Therapy-Off (example below) to obtain a baseline measure of sleep quality. It automatically switches to permanently provide Therapy-On (example above), while saving the first night baseline for comparison. Therapy-Off mode allows users to:

  • Your natural tendency toward wanting to sleep on your back, and whether this behavioral tendency changes from night to night.
  • Whether or not you have learned to stay off your back without therapy.
  • The effectiveness of treatment provided by other sleep apnea or snoring therapies when sleeping in all positions.

NightShift Sleep Positioner Monthly and Summarised Daily Reports

These summarised part of the report is designed to demonstrate to your physician that you are routinely using the therapy, as well as help you monitor your own therapy. After One month the data is moved to a Monthly Summary which shows the last 12 months summarised data.

Studies show...

Published studies, comparing sleep with and without the Night Shift, show participants spent less than 5% of their time sleeping on their backs while using the Night Shift.

Studies also found that 90% of POSA (Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnoea) participants responded positively to Night Shift therapy. Participants also experienced a reduction in daytime sleepiness and other medical conditions related to prolonged tiredness.

Measure Sleep Quality with Night Shift Device

Night Shift not only prevents users from sleeping on their back, it also measures sleep quality and snoring frequency. It provides the user with functional reports to monitor the effectiveness of the therapy. Night Shift can also determine whether or not poor sleep quality as a result of snoring is limited to supine sleeping.

    Night shift

Posted by Michael M. on 12th Apr 2019

After trying the Night Shift (hire) for a couple of weeks, I bought one.
Super easy to use, hardly notice it on. When I wake, I am aware that it was gently encouraging me to get off my back, stop snoring and having apnea episodes. Wearing it is of little bother seeing I am sleeping better, evident by not feeling tired in the afternoons any more.

An effective solution for positional apnoea and snoring

Posted by Christopher Kelly on 14th Dec 2016

I use this device with patients who have persistent apnoea and snoring issues whilst wearing an oral appliance for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea.
The reporting is very effective and the position recording matches the accelerometer in some of the best type 2, and 3 devices on the market.
I trust the Night Shift device to help my patients.

More of the medical profession need to be made aware of this product.

Posted by Jason on 24th Nov 2016

I was diagnosed with severe positional sleep apnoea in 2015.
I have had excellent results with Night Shift Sleep Positioner and I am disappointed that the medical professionals I have discussed my condition with, were not aware of the existence of the product.
I was not satisfied with the solutions I was offered by my Specialists, so I took it on myself to research what was available on the market and was delighted to find this product. It is definitely the right solution for me!

    HomeMed Response:
Thank you for the positive review. Awareness is increasing. At the October 2016 Australasian Sleep Association Conference we had lost of great feedback from the Sleep Physicians and Sleep Lab staff attending. Ben

Great solution versus idiotic 3 tennis ball approach!

Posted by David Wright on 22nd Oct 2016

I was diagnosed by Group Health of Washington with Positional Sleep Apnea. The 3 tennis ball approach was recommended, which didn't work at all for me. Since Group Health didn't know about this device, I had to purchase it internationally without a prescription. After a few days of usage, I can clearly see the benefits.

    Several early comments:

You need to provide detailed FDA information to your shipper to get it through customs.

You must tell your customers that the only combination of FireFox and Java that seems to work with your portal is the offline one shown as having 52.63mb on their site. I think this is the 32 bit version. The 64 bit version will not work with FireFox.

The 3-day clinician setting would not load into my device. Specifically, it did not turn the vibrator off the first night. I replicated it by doing a night with it turned off, and then turned it on for the next 2 days.

The night it was turned off did validate the study results done by Group Health.

The device has reduced my supine time from about 2.5 hours per night to nil, without any discomfort. As predicted in the instructions I have not, as yet, experienced any great improvement in sleep time. Hopefully that will occur as the device trains me to stay off my back over time.

I love the reports, especially the summary version.

Great product. I have recommended to Group Health that they consider it in their program, and they expressed interest.

I wish I found this device many years ago

Posted by Noel Brumley on 19th Oct 2016

This has made really noticeable improvement to my sleep. I no longer snore really loudly on my back. I no longer wake up each night with a dry mouth and throat from sleeping on my back. My wife doesn't have to push me over or nudge me in the ribs. I no longer have those bloody tennis balls pushing into my back in a feeble attempt to keep me off my back. I no longer have to continually throughout the night move the tennis balls into a more comfortable position. No more guessing how many times I tried to sleep on my back and I have written proof of all these details. Fantastic is all I can say.
